I wonder if the information on our international conference on academic writing in Israel next summer has reached you.  The deadline for submitting abstracts was yesterday, but if you haven't submitted an abstract yet and would like to come to our conference, we will extend the deadline a bit for you!  I'm attaching our second call for abstract submissions.  Also, have a look at our website.

You probably won't even remember me but I was on the EATAW committee for 2003 - from South Africa - we met at the conference in Budapest. I've just gone into this resource and am really impressed. I teach academic reading and writing (from a discourse perspective) as well, and would very much like access to the book as you indicate below, if you are willing. I will observe all copyright holds articulated in the book.

I have done just what you describe in the net-based tool Scribo - Guide to Research Questions and Literature Search, 2009, Lotte Rienecker & Tina Pipa (and in a corresponding textbook which unfortunately is not in an English version). The commented examples of student's research questions, choice of concepts, theories and methods and their literature search strategies, are from Danish universities, but there is a full English translation so that the resource may be used as a set of model examples by foreign students in Denmark. Some of you may remember an early version of the guide from my keynote presentation in Athens, EATAW 2005, on this. Much has happened with this tool since. and if any of you would like to see the full resource, please mail me and I will send you a password to a free access for instructors.

Most Danish universities subscribe to an intranet license, and some 50.000 Danish students have access to the resource. I would be very interested to have some international response/cooperation.

not specifically 'texts containing authentic student writing', but a whole bunch of other resources can be found on the site of the Association for Academic Language & Learning (AALL) at: http://www.aall.org.au/teaching.

The Writing for Assignments E-library (WrAssE) is not a text book but an online resource to encourage staff and students in higher education to explore how we judge student writing in terms of some of the key functions it fulfils, and qualities it displays. Go to www.learningdevelopment.plymouth.ac.uk and click on the little fish!

We hope students will be able to learn from WrAssE and be empowered by seeing authentic examples of successful written work by their peers - along with comments from academic about what 'works' in the students'
texts. Academic staff have found WrAssE a stimulating way to consider their own assessment criteria - and to bring to the surface some of the more taken-for-granted judgements they make about students work.

We worked on this at the University of Plymouth in the UK for some years and launched the resource as a prototype last year (with help from a nationally funded project called 'LearnHigher' - see www.learnhigher.ac.uk). WrAssE is far from perfect but we are keen to hear from people who have comments to make about it - and even more keen to discuss the possibility of partnerships with others to build upon and improve our work in this area.
