Apparently the item on the website is from Austism Insights, though it's not
clear if they chose the title. The titling of this item, "MMR doctor proved
right in week he was condemned as 'dishonest'," is quite interesting. If you
read the article you will notice that it claims the new study 'proves' (n.b.: I
tend share the neurodiversity position on the nature of autism, hence the '')
the link between autism and the gastro-intestinal intestinal issues. It does
not, however, prove that those gastro issues are related to the MMR vaccine,
notably because the data is American and in that country the vaccine is
mandatory. And so, if the study 'proves' anything at all, it proves Wakefield
only 'half' right.
The suspicion of the MMR vaccine (or any vaccine) is a fascinating twist on the
story too, part of a longstanding medical history trope dating back to early
modern suspicions of body snatching. You'll note that it seldom comes up in
this debate that NOT getting the vaccine could 'disable' a child, as these
illnesses can lead to deafness and other 'disabilities'. So the story is not
entirely about parents' and popular fears of disability, though that is
obviously a critical dimension. It's a layered phenomenon for sure.
