Please bring this announcement to the attention of any colleagues or postgrad students who might be interested: The Statistical Services Centre, University of Reading, offers the following online course: 'Statistics Made Simple' (e-SMS): basic statistics for researchers, 22 March to 10 May 2010. This facilitated, online course is about understanding variability. It includes the essentials needed to describe data well (descriptive statistics), and to make good generalisations (statistical inference); it covers the concept and uses of p-values, and establishes the groundwork for statistical modelling based on simple linear regression. e-SMS takes a very practical approach to statistics, and uses the internet for presentations, discussions, individual assignments and other learning activities. It runs online over seven weeks, and requires approximately one hour per day, arranged within each week to suit yourself. A high level of peer-to-peer and student-to-tutor interaction encourages learning and helps ensure completion. The coursework requires the use of statistical software: Instat is supplied free; alternatively participants may opt (if they have access) to use Genstat, R, SAS, or SPSS. Assignment instructions are provided for each package. Cost: £695 (£485 with academic discount).
