Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Curriculum Development - London South Bank University - ideas please We are just starting our process. From discussion with practitioners one option may prove attractive  and on which I would welcome feedback incorporates the same OH specialist units across all the OHN courses is highlighted below:

NMC validated SCPHN degree:

Non-NMC validated Occupational Health course

The Grad Cert/ Advanced Diploma points could then be used to make an APEL into a Health Studies type degree using other units which are offered within the university as part of the CPD strategy. The Nurse Practitioner and Practice Nurse programmes have  units on clinical skills  covering top to toe assessments including auscultation, MSD etc.

We would open up the Grad Cert and Adv Diploma to technicians. They too could APEL into a degree should they wish to.

Any thoughts?
Anne

Hi Anne,

I saw you put that it is to run 'side by side' with the SCPHN programme, will the other programme also be a degree?

We have an excellent OH nurse technician, who is interested in studying further, but not necessarily to degree level. As this role is developing, the aspects of health promotion from DAme Carol Black and the Boorman review are likely to be incorporated. Would this be incorporated into existing modules, or would this be a separate module?

From my personal experience, I have areas of practice that my degree covered, but that I do not use in my current practice, so I think it is difficult to be too specific. However, any health surveillance would be essential, incuding hand and skin as well as resiratory and auditory.

I will be interested to see how this develops.

Tracy

Dear List

We are about to embark on developing new programmes at LSBU. I would welcome feedback from practitioners regarding suggested content. Your comments will be used to inform the development of our programme. Your thoughts will be welcome.

It is likely that we will develop an NMC validated SCPHN programme but will probably also run another programme side by side that degree which covers the knowledge and skills to practice competently as an OHN. That non-NMC course will be focused solely on practice issues and competencies. I would not envisage much, if any, shared learning with HVs. The NMC validated programme must include some core learning with HVs and SNs. Irrespective of whether the course is NMC validated as SCPHN I believe that OHNs have always practiced public health and so public health concepts will be contained within the degree but it may include as much public health theory as our current programme.

I would envisage including:

    the effect of work on health and health on work;
    the skills of health and risk assessment;
    employment legislation;
    mental health;
    disability;
    H&S and employment legislation.
    Leadership, management and possibly entrepreneurism

Although some OHNs have requested that we include a short course on audiometry, spirometry and HAVS with an assessment of competence to undertake those courses. Unfortunately that is not possible as including such courses would significantly lengthen both the programme and increase the unit cost.

Any thoughts would be welcomed. We have one of the first meetings on Wednesday – here is your chance to influence OH education.
