Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Curriculum Development - London South Bank University - ideas please

Dear List

We are about to embark on developing new programmes at LSBU. I would welcome feedback from practitioners regarding suggested content. Your comments will be used to inform the development of our programme. Your thoughts will be welcome.

It is likely that we will develop an NMC validated SCPHN programme but will probably also run another programme side by side that degree which covers the knowledge and skills to practice competently as an OHN. That non-NMC course will be focused solely on practice issues and competencies. I would not envisage much, if any, shared learning with HVs. The NMC validated programme must include some core learning with HVs and SNs. Irrespective of whether the course is NMC validated as SCPHN I believe that OHNs have always practiced public health and so public health concepts will be contained within the degree but it may include as much public health theory as our current programme.

I would envisage including:

    the effect of work on health and health on work;
    the skills of health and risk assessment;
    employment legislation;
    mental health;
    disability;
    H&S and employment legislation.
    Leadership, management and possibly entrepreneurism

Although some OHNs have requested that we include a short course on audiometry, spirometry and HAVS with an assessment of competence to undertake those courses. Unfortunately that is not possible as including such courses would significantly lengthen both the programme and increase the unit cost.

Any thoughts would be welcomed. We have one of the first meetings on Wednesday – here is your chance to influence OH education.

Anne
