I don’t think it was a space issue as the layers are graded differently.

I  first worked with Chris  when we were both lecturers at the RCN (Chris is a paediatric nurse). She too came to work at London South Bank University before returning to practice at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She maintains an honorary contract at London South Bank . I wrote to her indicating that many OHNs were very  disappointed at our positioning within that model. I indicated that HVs, SN’s and NPs being placed at a higher level was very surprising particularly in view of OHNs SNs/HVs follow the same degree courses. Furthermore, the concept of Nurse Practitioner in primary care was first developed at the RCN back in the late 1980’s. In the early 1990’s at the RCN OHNs and NPs again followed the same degree framework with common core units supplemented with each pathway studying their own pathway specific units. Chris would be aware of these educational programmes.

In her response to me Chris indicated that this is a draft and the positioning of OHNs at a lower level than HVs and SNs was unintentional. Possibly because of our links through the RCN and LSBU she has asked me if I would like to be involved in future discussions re nursing careers. I have agreed to contribute so hopefully the final model will more accurately reflect the diversity and responsibilities of our roles.

Perhaps the omission is not to due with a misunderstanding about the OHN roll,m ore lack of space in fitting it in the centre of the circle?
If  want to complain effectively, instead of saying "me too" get out your pen and send a letter snail mail. It is easy to cut and paste and send an email... but if they get 50-100 paper letters expressing concern they will know as a group we are  highly motivated and wish to influence. And willing to invest the time, and the money for a stamp. If we are practising at the level we claim to be, we should be capable of drafting a letter...

Hi Anne

Thanks again for this.

It seems like the NMC are clearly uneasy about our Specialist role. Do they not realise that by definition, they are de-specialisting a specialist role by giving practice nurses yet another hat to wear. On top of this, it very much seems to me that the NMC perceives nurse education to be the main provider of specialist nurses (as opposed to the way we develop inital training to reading countless journals and continued networking).

Its like Miriam learning to become a Cardiologist after 2 extra years from a part time University Course.

Its astounding! only the NMC eh?

have a great day
