A common enough occurrence in my world. Carr is quite right
in my view (provided the employee has consented to the contact). The pitfall to
avoid through good relations and communication with all parties is to ensure OH
does not get perceived as protector and advocate for the employee Usually by
the employee) through your contact with them as it may compromise your ability
to provide impartial advice on capability later in the day and can make the
matter even worse.

Hi Sharon
We would assess if there was any concern regarding mental well being irrespective
of cause but in the management report clarify if it is normal distress when
discussing the situation or actual clinical illness. We direct to support
services as needed again stressing that this is for health management purposes
to help them manage their health while the management action is proceeding.
Quite often i end up saying to that if there is a medical issue e.g. an anxiety
condition / reactive depression etc while medical treatment should enable
recovery from a purely medical standpoint in however many weeks the work issues
are likely to be a continuing barrier to work until resolved to safisfaction of
all parties.

Interesting debate going on here at
the moment
Employees trigger automatic OH
referral if they are off with "stress" or similar. Individuals
can also be referred if there is management concern. We do have the
facility to refer on for counselling/ CBT if needed. We also have a
"welfare" service seperate from OH.
However - would be interested to know
if anyone out there has any policies with regards to what OH involvement there
is (if any) when employees are suspended from duty pending investigation into
alleged wrongdoing? I have a resquest that I contact someone who is suspended
because they are not "coping" and there are concerns about their well
being. While I am fairly confident about what i am going to do I would be
particularly interested in hear from colleagues in police/fire and rescue or
similar.
