medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Probably not much help for the east, but one of the loveliest examples I've ever come across of non-religious use of sacred space is the seventh century church of St Chad, near Bradwell-on-Sea in England. A new parish church was built in the 13th century, and the old church was deconsecrated and eventually became a barn. In the 1930's it was restored, and reconsecrated, and although it no longer has a transept, and the evidence of the barn doors is still present, it feels like a holy place when you are inside.
