Bridget I think the point here is this - to get data out there, useable and in the wider public development domain, culture API's ought to be seen as a marketing challenge, and the job from here on in needs to be scoped and presented as such. That's why I was quite freaked to see so very few culture API's in ProgrammableWeb. We really need to see data as a product; assuming it's up to standard [up to date, reliable, covered by some sort of SLA, copyright sorted, geo-referenced etc] then it's a viable business opportunity for any culture vendor who 'owns' a subject, venue, collection or knowledge base. And useful for me (and you) as I have been given a quest. You may remember an email from me checking there wasn't a date clash on 6 March because of a DCMS event, which will be a pretty high profile hack day using cultural sector and other public datasets. One key idea is that developers & DCMS sector service managers might collaborate to mash-up and serve, for example, location data with heritage at risk, or social demographics data with the spread of cultural offers. I've been asked now to help collate a register of available data. So, I'm asking Martin's question of: 'Is this the closest thing we have at the moment to a 'plug in here to access all accessible heritage content' space? But with added questions, which are asking for your help. 1) Mia (& Mike who started it), as your site is so helpful, this would seem a good base to build on. To help, is it possible for you to add a section or adjust categories so that more diverse cultural datasets could be listed e.g. not just from a museum but from a policy body or umbrella service like Culture24? 2) Can we highlight some useful datasets from Programmable Web and data.gov in there as well, for example data that is related to spending or participation in the sector? 3) Are there any museum/heritage datasets in process of being made open that could be listed as coming soon. 'Watch this space'. 4) And if anyone knows of any sets/APIs that could be available by March 6th, can you let me know, or this list? 5) Mike, as I guess you're about to do, it would be good if some of the examples from Mashed Museum could be listed in the section 'Cool stuff made with cultural heritage APIs' (plus examples that could be in Mashed Museum but aren't, such as Frankie's Open Plaques) 6) Do we need to have a good description of the Culture Grid and Europeana in this site, or did I miss it in my rush? Hoping this will be helpful to us all (and to Martin too, though I fear I may have hijacked your thread).
