Edinburgh has edged its way into FileOpen. One or two of our academics have used it very successfully and I was able to persuade our IT people to at least install it in a small bank of pcs in one of the Open labs. One of my colleagues tested it there without difficulty and IT have now rolled it out into the Open Labs. Unfortunately, our Colleges have more devolved control over their systems. However the IT person who did the Open Lab work for us has circulated information to the Colleges so that they can decide themselves whether or not to go down that road. Things are looking quite promising... Reports so far suggest it is a superior product and overcomes the limitations of using Adobe Digital editions. As our documents are delivered directly to end users, lots using shared pcs, FileOpen would have to be rolled out across campus by our IT department. I don't yet know if they would be prepared to do this so would be very grateful to hear from any other institutions who have gone down this route. Has it been successful, what are the pitfalls, what are the advantages, is it stable, etc? Many thanks in advance for any information you have.
