Hello, We have very basic cataloguing records too, but have it set up so that all our e-journals (including open access titles) are displayed on pages on our intranet - I think it's called dynamic HTML, where we only have to change the details on the library management system, and it changes on the intranet pages too. We can categorise journals that we pay for, free titles, and those needing passwords or registration to use, and we also have space to write down what years the subscription period covers. We have an ejournal template on Unicorn Workflows, and our cataloguing is fairly basic! 3.We also encourage users to refer to the catalogue first, rather than the Swets A-Z list for example. We are a membership organisation and this gives prospective members an idea of what's available. However, it's very time consuming and it's difficult to give current information on holdings etc. Rosemary Strivens Assistant Librarian, Systems Royal Society of Medicine 1 Wimpole St London W1G 0AE 0207 290 3827 E: [log in to unmask] -----Original Message----- From: An informal open list set up by UKSG - Connecting the Information Community [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Sharon Robinson Sent: 18 January 2010 11:22 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] Ejournal cataloguing We are looking at our ejournal cataloguing policy. We currently manually catalogue both individual ejournal subscriptions and ejournals which come as a part of large packages, but are finding this difficult to sustain. It would be useful to hear of other libraries' experiences. I am happy to summarise for the list. 1. Does your institution manually catalogue both its individual ejournal subscriptions and ejournals which come as a part of large packages? 2. Do you use MARCit or a similar product? 3. Have there been any downsides from using MARCit, for example, in terms of reduced searchability of your catalogue? 4. If you answered yes to either of questions 1 or 2, what is your rationale for continuing to include ejournals in your library catalogue, rather than rely on the A-Z list of a product such as SFX? 5. Has anyone decided to abandon the cataloguing of ejournals (with perhaps the exception of individual subscriptions) in favour of the A-Z list in SFX (or similar product)?
