The Department of German Studies
at the University of Nottingham is one of the leading centres for research in
German Studies in the UK. In 1996 and 2001 it was awarded the highest grade
(5*) by the Higher Education Funding Council for the excellence of its
research. In the national Research Assessment Exercise 2008 it was ranked fifth
in terms of research power in UK German Studies, with just under 90% of its
