Subject: FW: Environment Agency external consultation: Hydrogeological Risk Assessments for Landfills: Legislative update - request for comments.

Dear all

What is this all about?

Due to forthcoming proposed changes in legislation, we have revised and updated our existing guidance on hydrogeological risk assessment for landfills (first published February 2003). We are running a 12-week external consultation and are contacting you, as representatives of relevant organisations, to request views and comments. If you feel you are not in a position to comment then please delete this email. Please find attached:

 * Hydrogeological Risk Assessments for Landfills and the Derivation of Groundwater Control and Trigger Levels (draft consultation version).
 *   Summary document
What has changed?

This guidance explains our requirements for groundwater risk assessment and the setting of groundwater control and trigger levels. The update has mainly focused on ensuring that landfill risk assessments will meet the requirements of the Environmental Permitting Regulations (2010), which are expected to go live in April 2010.

What do I need to do?

If you feel that you would like to comment then please review the attached guidance and follow the instructions below. Please respond to Helen Moorhouse ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by the 06 April 2010.

Responding to this consultation

We would prefer you to respond online using the link below. If you respond online or provide us with an email address, we will acknowledge your response and send you a summary of responses after the consultation has closed. We will also publish the summary of responses on our website.

https://consult.environment-agency.gov.uk/portal/ho/ep/groundwater/landfills

We will publish all responses after the consultation has closed, unless you have specifically requested that we keep your response confidential. We will not publish names of individuals who respond. We will publish the name of the organisation for those responses made on behalf of organisations. Please indicate on your response if you want us to treat it as confidential.

If you are unable to respond online we have included a response form at the end of this document to make it easier for you to structure your comments (using this approach will make collation of comments easier). Please use the appended form and post to:

Or you can email Helen Moorhouse.

IMPORTANT: This draft guidance is for consultation only and must not be referenced or used in routine work until it is finalised.

The consultation runs from Tuesday 12 January 2010 to Tuesday 06 April 2010. We will not be able to take into account comments received after this date.

Please feel free to disseminate this information amongst your peers, work colleagues and teams.

Kind regards

Phil
