Dear Lex and All,

Lex, thank you for sharing this information and calling for our participation. The International Network of Women With Disabilities (INWWD) is working on a document (or documents) to submit to the Beijing +15 review and hopefully individual organizations of women with disabilities and individual women with disabilities will also make contributions. If there are any women with disabilities or allied women on the IDA CRPD Forum list who would like to join the INWWD, please email me off this list at [log in to unmask]

  Subject: Invitation to OHCHR online discussion on Women and Human Rights, dedicatedto the fifteen-year review of the implementation of the BeijingDeclaration and Platform for Action (1995) and the outcomes of the twenty-thirdspecial session of the General Assembly (2000)

  Dear Colleagues, Experts, Human Rights Defenders, Friends,

  We would like to invite you to participate in an e-discussion on "Women and Human Rights" to be held from 1 - 28 February 2010, organized and moderated by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Click here to access the e-discussion:
  http://esango.un.org/irene/?page=viewThreads&nr=21&section=5

  The immediate purpose of the e-discussion is to bring together experts, practitioners and policy-makers, from within and outside of the UN system, to formulate critical messages to the 15-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. As you are our prominent experts on women's human rights and gender equality, your contribution to this on-line e-discussion would be of great importance and value to us.

  This e-discussion represents a unique opportunity to make your voice heard, and to influence deliberations of the UN intergovernmental process. We invite you to bring new thoughts and past experiences to the Women's Human Rights discussion, and thus contribute to strengthened protection and promotion of human rights of women.

  The on-line discussion will focus on the following sub-themes:

  • National legal frameworks – challenges, trends and best practices with respect to legal protection of women’s human rights (week 1);
  • Accountability – challenges, trends and best practices with respect to ensuring  accountability for violations of human rights of women, including violence against women (week 2);
  • Access to justice – challenges, trends and best practices with respect to women’s access to justice (week 3);
  • Summary, wrap-up and observations (week 4).

  Each week will start with a short introduction to the theme to trigger and encourage a constructive and fruitful on-line discussion, to be summarized and analyzed in order to contribute to the Beijing +15 review. The discussion will be moderated by the OHCHR Women's Rights and Gender Section in Geneva, created in late 2006 to enhance women's human rights and gender integration. We hope that you will make use of this opportunity to contribute to the intergovernmental process. We also encourage you to forward this invitation to colleagues who may be interested in the above.

  If you are not already a member of the CSO Net, please register for the e-discussion by clicking here:
  http://esango.un.org/irene/index.html?page=signUpIndividual&section=5

  The discussion on "Women and Human Rights" organized by OHCHR is part of a series of United Nations online discussions dedicated to the fifteen-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) and the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly (2000) (http://www.un.org/womenwatch/beijing15/); and is hosted by WomenWatch (http://www.un.org/womenwatch/), an inter-agency project of the United Nations Inter-agency Network on Women and Gender Equality and a unique electronic gateway to web-based information on all United Nations entities' work and the outcomes of the United Nations’ intergovernmental processes for the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

  Best regards and with hopes for a fruitful discussion.

  Cecilia Möller, Human Rights Officer (Officer-in-Charge)
  Women's Rights and Gender Section
  Research and Right to Development Division
  Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
  United Nations Office at Geneva
