Dear All,

Please circulate widely.

Participation is open to all PhD students and researchers (no more than 3 years post-PhD) across the social, natural and medical sciences with an interest in the relationship between the natural environment and human well-being. Funding is available for up to 20 participants and the workshop will take place at the University of Aberdeen on 30th and 31st March 2010. Please see further details below.

‘Interdisciplinarity in Environment & Well-being Research’: An Early Career Researcher Workshop

The workshop is organised as part of the on-going ESRC, MRC and BBSRC funded ‘BeWEL’ (Behaviour for Well-being, Environment and Life; www.bewel.net) exploratory research network, funded under the ESRC’s Understanding Individual Behaviour programme. Funding from BeWEL is available to cover the costs of travel within the UK and overnight accommodation for up to 20 workshop attendees.

The workshop will bring together participants from a range of academic disciplines to explore and debate the relationship between the natural environment and personal well-being, and the nature of associated cross-disciplinary research requirements, with the aim of fostering future research collaborations. It will include presentations from invited speakers and members of the BeWEL research team, and involve a range of interactive, small group activities. Participants will also be invited to present (very brief) overviews of their own research interests.

The workshop will take place over two days in Aberdeen, starting at 2pm on Tuesday 30th March and finishing at 1pm the following day. Accommodation will be provided for the night of the 30th; any additional accommodation being funded by attendees themselves.

How to apply

Applications to take part in the workshop are invited from PhD students or early career researchers (no more than 3 years post-PhD). Participants’ interests might include, for example, objective and subjective well-being, ageing, interactions with nature, pro-environment behaviour change, methodological innovation, and interdisciplinarity. Non UK applicants are welcome but will have to fund their own travel to the UK.

If you would like to apply (preferably by email), please send a short letter explaining how attending the workshop might benefit your current research, along with a short (maximum of two pages) CV to:
