Baxter Secretary/Treasurer, RSS Leeds/Bradford Local Group, Division of Biostatistics, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT, UK. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Leeds/Bradford: Wednesday 10 February, 4.00pm, University of Leeds. Statistics, Swine Flu and Strictly Come Dancing - a overview of RSS media engagement. Andrew Garratt (Royal Statistical Society). In his presidential address, David Hand said "There is no aspect of modern life upon which statistics does not impinge." Having helped provide responses to journalists' enquiries on topics ranging from swine flu and knife crime statistics to cosmetic surgery and the Strictly Come Dancing voting system, the RSS press office can confirm that, from a media point of view, this statement seems undoubtedly true. The talk will take a look at the requests that have come in over the last four years, examine the impact the Society has had with its proactive press work, and give some tips on making engagement with the media as effective (and enjoyable!) as possible. The meeting will be held at Leeds University Roger Stevens Building in RSLT 16, starting at 4.00pm. Refreshments will be available from 3.30pm in the foyer of level 9 of the School of Mathematics.
