Venue: Foyer of Roberts Building, UCL (Malet Place). See map:=20 http://www.ucl.ac.uk/maps/ucl-maps/map2_low_res There is a well recognised need for existing and new infrastructure to be a= ble=20 to cope with increasing environmental and economic pressures.=20 These systems should be designed taking into account the implications of=20 climate change, which may lead to a greater incidence of natural disasters= =20 (e.g. floods) as well as man-induced hazards (terrorist attacks, fires) as= =20 suggested by the Stern Review (Cabinet Office/H.M Treasury, 2006). Issues=20 such as population growth, an aging demographic, spread of disease, changes= =20 in economic prosperity and other factors must also be considered. This symposium will bring together stakeholders, engineers and policy maker= s=20 to explore the challenges that must be faced when designing infrastructure = for=20 the 21st century. Through a series of talks and open debates we will be=20 asking some key questions on the subject, such as:=20 - How can we evaluate infrastructure for a super-long time horizon e.g. 10= 0=20 years?=20 - Adaptable infrastructure: should we build buildings to fail=85nicely?=20 - What makes infrastructure sustainable?=20 - Is 'sustainable' good? If you have any other ideas for topics that you would like to see raised at= the=20 Symposium please feel free to contact me. The Symposium is part of an ongoing cooperative programme between UCL=20 and Yamaguchi University (Japan) to commemorate the "Choshu Five", who=20 left Choshu (present day Yamaguchi), breaching Japanese law by travelling t= o=20 London to study at UCL in 1863. They are renowned for later returning to=20 Japan to revolutionize and modernize the country.=20 Registration Fee: =A350 To register for this event please complete the form here:=20 http://www.cege.ucl.ac.uk/Home/choshu5symposium/registration Once you have submitted your details you will be able to access a link on t= he=20 confirmation page to pay the =A350 registration fee via PayPal.
