Your references to trying to get B-doubles on the road in Britain are very timely as a history of the struggle in Australia was released two weeks ago.  B-doubles: the first decade in Australia, charts the difficulties experienced with trials, opposition by rail interests and other opposing groups. 

 

The release was timed to coincide with the 25^th anniversary of the first B-double permitted in Eastern Australia.  The struggle was worth it as B-doubles now carry more freight than any other vehicle configuration in Australia.

 

The history in Australia would also be good background reading to a paper to be presented to the HVTT 11 Symposium in Melbourne in March 2010.  That paper, Higher productivity freight vehicles: lessons of history – a case study of B-doubles in Australia, will identify the lessons learnt in Australia and quantifies the economic, safety and environmental benefits of B-doubles.

All profits from the sale of the history are being used to establish an Australian Transport History Library.
