Completely agree with what you have said below, Anne! In the end, to teach/learn foreign languages is for peace and understanding. It is a business that should be inclusive but not exclusive. We should work together, state schools or private schools if we have the same aim.

I am copying in the forum as others may be interested too in this....
In answer to Holly below from Dulwich I have raised this issue already with the organisers of the competition and they told me that the competition is aimed at state schools only and in particular those where the take up of langauges is poor to try and encourage students to take up languages. They told me that they used to allow private schools to pay to take part but not any more.

I think that the private schools that offer thriving language departments could do much more to help state schools and I would be keen to do this. These blinkered government education departments would gain a lot by including us teachers in private schools where languages flourish and finding ways that we can work with state schools to improve the take up of languages.

Is there a view from SSAT on this ?

Count me in, I am really furious about this. Promoting languages shouldn't be distinguished by what schools they are. We should raise the issues to the organiser.

Similar case in the HSBC and British run Mandarin Speaking Competition, eventually they welcome students from independent schools joining.

All
Please see below an interesting competition to design a poster welcoming people to the London Olympics in a foreign language
http://www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/london/activity/1448

BUT only teachers in state specialist schools can enter.

I tried to enter for my school and was told -no private schools. I complained as I am of the opinion that this is discrimination as our parents pay taxes that go to fund government departments that run these competitions. I was curtly rebuffed.

When I have some time I plan to take this issue further. If others have views on this please let me know.
