They collaborate with peers and with more experienced scholars/researchers who provide support and guidance, and they share the results of their inquiries with each other and wider audiences. Some approaches to IBL involve students in large-scale, 'whole-cycle' research projects while others involve them in exploring a smaller-scale question or theme and in developing their understanding of, and skills in, specific elements of a larger research process. This workshop will offer an introduction to IBL across the academic disciplines, and to research/evaluation that has investigated the impact of this approach to learning and teaching on students' learning experiences. Case examples of IBL at the University of Sheffield will be presented, including examples of information literacy development activities for IBL and inquiry-based approaches to information literacy pedagogy. Workshop 2 (3.30-4.30pm) From the perspective of the IBL designer-facilitator, the challenge is to create the conditions in which students' inquiries are stimulated, and in which students are supported effectively to develop their inquiry capabilities and skills. Support takes the form of activities, assessments, resources, guidance and environments that are designed to scaffold the inquiry experience. This workshop will present a conceptual framework for an undergraduate 'inquiry curriculum', and explore principles and practical ideas for designing and assessing IBL. The workshop will include a small-scale, practical design task - participants will be able to choose between working together in small groups on a scenario that will be provided, or on a real-life scenario based on their own interests. The expectation is that the workshop will generate different perspectives and ideas, which participants may wish to build on in their own practice. Both workshops will be interactive and suitable for both IBL 'beginners' and more experienced practitioners of IBL, including academic staff and professional services staff involved in the development and support of learning and teaching. Profile Professor Philippa Levy is Director of the Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences (CILASS) and a member of the Department of Information Studies at the University of Sheffield. CILASS is a national Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, awarded to Sheffield in 2005. Currently, Phil is also leading an institutional research/development project at the University, called 'The LRT Project: Integrating Learning, Research and Teaching'.
