Subject: SHINE update

Dear all

I am writing to update you on progress with the SHINE project, and to thank you for your contribution to date.

The SHINE v1 data, submitted in May 2009, is now available to farmers and landowners via Genesis and will appear on all forthcoming Farm Environment Record maps issued by Natural England. The SHINE v2 data, to which 30 HERs contributed, should be available in Genesis during February 2010.

At the same time the SHINE website has recently gone live, and can be viewed at www.myshinedata.org.uk. It includes

* Tools for farmers and landowners to locate and see details of HE features on their holding, both as SHINE records and Scheduled Monuments

* A progress map showing the date and volume of SHINE data submitted by each HER.

* Restricted access for HERs to download the full SHINE GIS dataset or access this via Web Mapping Services, with instructions on how to do so. This will allow you to load the SHINE dataset into your own GIS, to compare across HER boundaries etc. If you'd like the password for this area of the website, please get in touch with me.

Owing to changes in the NE timetabling, we have a unavoidably narrow window to get another batch of HER data into the next SHINE release for Feb 2010. The next deadline for submission to me will be 22nd January 2010 and the priority for this deadline should be firstly, the validation of the SNHD if not already done, and secondly, creating SHINE records for any areas under ELS that are due for renewal in 2010. If any HERs intend to contribute for this deadline, or would like some help in identifying areas to target, please get in touch. The next deadline will be late spring/early summer 2010.

I have now taken on the role of SHINE coordinator, so please get in touch with any queries you may have. Likewise if you have any feedback regarding the website, please let me know, and we can consider them for the future.

All best wishes, and wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010!

Sarah
