Dear colleagues,

Can I invite you to take up a new free training opportunity from the English Heritage Training and Standards team? This is a distance learning course which provides an introduction to the Management of Research Projects in the Historic Environment (MoRPHE) guidelines. MoRPHE (available via www.english-heritage.org.uk/morphe ) covers the management of all historic environment research and ‘research and development’ (R&D) projects undertaken or funded by English Heritage, and also in our Planning and Development group. MoRPHE provides a framework of defined roles, procedures, stages, terms, and key documents to assist the communication and management of research projects in our sector.

Who is it for?

MoRPHE Familiarisation by distance learning is a brief introductory course suitable for all those involved in research and R&D. As frequent stakeholders and active participants in EH or EH funded research, HER officers have been identified as a key audience for familiarisation with the MoRPHE approach. We hope that the guidelines will also prove useful for use by HERs for planning their own projects. Our intention is that the flexibility of this distance learning approach will make this training more easily accessible for many colleagues in the HER sector. No previous experience of project management is needed.

How does it work?

This is a distance learning course so you will receive a course pack by post, and can then work through the course materials and exercises at your own pace, and at a location and time that suits you. Around 2-4 hours work will be needed. You are then encouraged to assess your own learning.

The course pack includes:-

*           A printed copy of the MoRPHE Project Managers Guide.

*           Guidance on organising your time and setting objectives for your distance learning.

*           A course booklet introducing you to key sections of the Guide, and suggesting activities to help you understand these.

*           A self-assessment questionnaire to help you check what you have learned.

To get the most from this course you should have:-

*           Support for taking this course from your manager / section leader

*           An email address and internet access

*           A postal address for us to send your course materials to.

Further information

This course is free, but does cost money to provide. We expect you to complete the course within 4 weeks of receiving the course pack and will contact you after this time to see how you are progressing.  With this in mind please do not register until you know you have approximately 2-4 hours set aside in the next few weeks to complete the course fully.

Further details of MoRPHE are available online at: www.english-heritage.org.uk/morphe

MoRPHE and PRINCE2: MoRPHE is based upon a simplified version of the PRINCE2 project management method, widely used in central government. PRINCE2 is still in regular use in some departments within English Heritage, in particular in IT systems development.
