I entered what sounds like a similar feature into the HER last year following a conservation preoject on one. At the moment it is under the candidate thesaurus term ‘tar boiler’. I’m waiting to see what happens to my next bunch of candidate terms when they’re submitted.

Subject: Bark-pots

 

Dear All

I'm struggling to to find a thesaurus term for a feature on the Northumberland coast, known locally as 'bark-pots' and wondered if anyone else has these, or something similar?

 

Bark-pots comprised a square structure with a hearth and short chimney (stone or brick) and a large open metal tank above the hearth. They were like a big outdoor version of a wash house set-pot and were used to boil water and tannin-rich substance (originally oak bark, then cutch) to treat ropes and sails and were in common use along the coast until the 1950s-60s.

 

Any suggestions gratefully received.
