RE: Meshes of the Afternoon

I agree with Nicky.  Sitney's writing on Deren is excellent, but with regard to discovering the 'secrets' of Meshes perhaps its best to look at Deren's own writings, some of which are reproduced in Bill Nichols' edited collection Maya Deren and the American Avant-garde (2001).  I especially like what she says about women's time being about 'waiting.'  You could also look at Essential Deren: Collected Writings on Film (2005).
