Postdoc position at the Centre for Welfare State Research, University of
Southern Denmark


At the Department of Political Science and Public Management, University of
Southern Denmark in Odense an 18-month position as a postdoc with a
possibility of prolongation is available in connection with the research
programme “Reforming the Institutions of the Welfare State”. The aim of the
research programme is to study changes in the tasks and functions of the
welfare state.

The postdoc will be responsible for working on a microsimulation model to
assess welfare state reforms. This project is located at the Centre for
Welfare State Research and has the purpose of establishing better and more
flexible measures of welfare states. In turn these measures feed analysis of
contemporary welfare state reforms and their consequences for different
population groups. 

The tasks of the appointee will include:
- In collaboration with colleagues, implementing and testing the OECD
microsimulation model programmed in Stata for a number of countries with
relation to personal taxation, certain social security and social assistance
schemes, housing allowance and payment for childcare starting with the years
2007 or 2008.
- Building and implementing own modules decided upon and designed with
colleagues.
- Updating and validating the OECD and own modules on a yearly basis.
- International coordination of work on the microsimulation model.

Not only will the postdoc work closely together with colleagues at the
Centre for Welfare State Research (see www.sdu.dk/welfare) at the Department
of Political Science and Public Management, SDU, but also with colleagues
abroad. The microsimulation project is nested in the Nordic Networks of
Excellence Reassess (www.reassess.no) and NordWel
(http://blogs.helsinki.fi/nord-wel/), and the EU FP6 Network of Excellence
Recwowe (http://recwowe.vitamib.com/). The postdoc will be responsible for
collaborating and coordinating with researchers, particularly in Paris,
Oxford, Nantes, Oslo, Helsinki and Stockholm. The postdoc will be country
responsible for a small number of countries, including some Central and
Eastern European countries.

Finally, the postdoc is expected to participate actively in research
activities at the Centre for Welfare State Research and the Department of
Political Science and Public Management, including undertaking comparative
studies, writing and presenting papers and articles, and writing research
grant applications.


Applicant’s qualifications:

To qualify for the position, applicants must have a PhD or be near to
completion of a PhD in Political Science or another relevant discipline
within the Social Sciences. The applicant must also have knowledge of Stata
or other programmes and especially an interest in working with modelling
complex elements and relations. Finally, the applicant must have good
academic, social and language skills.

Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
