Dear all, See correspondence below and, if you're interested, do follow the link. The reference for his book is Hulme, M. (2009) Why We Disagree About Climate Change. Cambridge University Press. I enjoyed it. . Pity he can't speak at our conference... The offers to contribute to the conference are slowly coming in - do let us know if there I anyone else you would like us to specifically invite - we do have various ideas moving along - we are anticipating, for example, to have a poet-in-residence ( Matt Harvey) . I've been trying to think whether I can put this one into my speaking calendar for 2010, but regretfully I will have to say I can't. I have a major conference in the first half of that week in London and amidst a rapidly filling diary a further trip down to Plymouth the same week I fear will be one too many for me. I am sorry, but I just get too many interesting invitations these days to accept them all. Not sure whether you've heard it, but can I recommend this psychology programme - All In The Mind - on national Australian radio in which I discuss at some length the ideas in my book: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/allinthemind/stories/2009/2746165.htm#transcript. It was broadcast a couple of weeks ago. I appreciate your interest in my work With my regards, Mike From: Annie Mitchell [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: 13 November 2009 12:59 To: [log in to unmask] Cc: Thorne Lisa (DEVON PCT) Subject: FW: UK Community Psychology Conference: July 1st and 2nd 2010 Dear Professor Hulme, I know you are much in demand as a public speaker but I wonder if you would be willing to discuss with us whether you might come to the University of Plymouth as a guest speaker to the forthcoming conference run by the UK Community Psychology Network ( see below and attached) ? Having appreciated reading your book and listened to your podcast ( University of Nottingham broadcast).I think as community psychologists, we would be especially interested in your thinking around the 4 myths that you identify and the myth of justice in particular - and your thoughts on what sorts of input the discipline(s) of psychology should/ could contribute to social debate on the idea(s) of climate change. Do you think that this would interest you and that there might be something you could offer us? The conference is an annual event; generally we focus on some element of social justice, such as challenging social inequalities - the event tends to be relatively informal with plenty of debate, argument and creativity, with a relatively high proportion of engaged citizens as well as academic and applied psychologists. We anticipate attendance of around 80, we hope more, depending on how much the topic captures peoples' imagination. Very grateful for your considering this. Further information and invitation to contribute is attached. It will be held on the University of Plymouth campus July 1st and 2nd 2010. We hope the conference will be challenging, creative and participatory - we would love to have a variety of contributions, from citizens/ community members as well as psychologists and activists. Please circulate this through your various networks AND OFFER YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS BEFORE 22ND JANUARY 2010. We will be sending out the attendance registration forms early in the new year. We hope to keep attendance costs low: anticipated range £40 - £120 depending on income, with bursaries for unwaged presenters. We anticipate that there will be plenty of inexpensive local accommodation; the venue is minutes away from the train station for ease of access and Plymouth is a very interesting city by the sea and close to the moor. PUT IT IN YOUR DIARIES NOW!
