The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists is embarking on a digitisation project of its collection of plans, and is looking for a volunteer to assist with this project. The plans document the building of the present College site in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and related sites around Regents Park in particular, and include details of furniture and the original College building in Queen Anne Street, off Harley Street. Many of the plans are still in current use by the College’s Estates Department, hence the need for digitisation, which will be performed by an external company, possibly in the first quarter of 2010. Tasks will included repackaging and labelling of the plans; identification of important areas of the collection for priority digitisation; liaison with College staff relating to the current use of the plans; and involvement with the internal and external promotion of the collection. The volunteer could expect to learn about best practices in archival storage and preservation, to play a major role in the digitisation project, and to create opportunities and methods to bring attention to the heritage collections of the College. There would also be the opportunity to become involved in basic records management tasks, should the volunteer be able to make a substantial commitment. This is an unpaid post and would suit someone building up experience prior to applying for a place on an Archives and Records Management course. The ideal candidate will be computer literate, possibly with a familiarity with archival databases, neat and methodical in his/her work, able to work independently and to communicate ideas, and possess a genuine interest in archives and the importance of historical records in a modern context. A commitment of at least one day a week, Monday to Friday, is expected and the hours and start date can be tailored to suit the volunteer. Travel can be refunded up to zone 6 and a free lunch is provided in the College cafeteria.
