Colleagues,

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has recently/is going through/about to undertake a move to new premises, and who may have prepared documentation on restricting access to your collections. This is something we're starting to grapple with here in Birmingham, conscious as we are of the need to engage with a variety of stakeholders such as users, depositors, local media, TNA etc.

The new Library of Birmingham is scheduled to open in mid-2013, and working backwards from this point we are trying to get some picture of when we will have to start closing collections, or providing access to them in a different way. There are clear legislative (FOI, DP) issues, as well as the wider PR focus. Are there any other concerns which have become apparent during your own moves? What periods of time have offices closed for in order to move? What level of preparatory work was done in advance? What service was provided during any closed period?

Tied into this is the issue of accessions, and the point at which we stop accepting new material. Have other offices done this, and what was the response to such a strategy? Again, I'd be very interested to hear your views. Any documentation provided will of course be treated with the strictest confidence. If more convenient, I'm more than happy to speak to colleagues over the phone.

Many thanks,

David
