Real roles live: real jobs for people with learning disabilities

Details

Date: 27 January 2010
Venue: The Kings Fund, London W1
Cost: free

About the event

In the public sector we have a poor track record in employing people with learning disabilities in our workforce. That is why the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA), learning disability arts organisation Heart n Soul and the Department of Health (DH) invite you to 'Real Roles Live'. It is a free, one-day conference at the Kings Fund, London.

There are 1.5 million people in the UK with a learning disability, but only 7.5 per cent of those of working age have a job. Most of these are in part-time roles, paid at the lower permitted work earnings rate of £20 per week.

It's time for us to change our expectations. People with learning disabilities want equal opportunities to a working life. It's about:

*	financial independence
*	learning
*	self-esteem
*	being part of a community.

This event is designed to support public sector organisations get people into work and will provide you with:

*	information about how to get involved with the Real Roles Community of Practice (CoP)
*	concrete examples of what has worked for other local authorities
*	contacts to help you set up similar schemes
*	opportunities to network with speakers and service users
*	the chance to exchange views and showcase your own ideas
*	an opportunity to meet with members of the DH's new Valuing Employment Now team.

Who should attend

*	Directors and assistant directors of adult social services
*	Managers of learning disability services
*	Local authority heads of human resources (HR)
*	NHS and other public sector organisations
*	Other members of local strategic partnerships (LSPs).
