For an example of a contemporary art exhibition on a micro scale (the only scale possible in our small display area) see the write-up of Derek Ogbourne's "The MicroMuseum of Optography", an exhibition held at the British Optical Association Museum from September 2008 to March 2009 and the first time the museum had ever collaborated with a contemporary artist or indeed any form of external curator. The items of contemporary art, inspired by a macabre historic event, were interspersed among the permanent exhibits. There was also a dedicated section of the display to which the artist was given free rein, but this was within the confines of a single pull-out drawer....but he sure packed a lot in! We held three special events in conjunction with the exhibition which resulted in what were then record visitor figures, though we have since surpassed those, perhaps because awareness of our museum is growing exponentially, helped by exposure to different audiences through projects like this.

Hello

Wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction?

I am looking for examples of projects or programme collaborations between museums and contemporary artists. In particular examples of collections or sites that do not have a past track record of working with contemporary art. Rather than contemporary art galleries which have a proven track record with the art community. Social History or natural science collections are often more of a challenge, but I feel could potentially be more rewarding to the museum, artist and visitor.

It could be an artists in residence using collections or something a bit more long lasting. If you have any good case studies I would be interested to hear from you. (Although I did like the grennan and sperandio residency that was showcased at the SHCG ASW).

Yours

Stephen
