I think another question is what the definition of an e-portfolio is for this discussion.

If it is as an assessment e-portfolio and the learner owns it - there is the potential for them to be able to edit assessor and verifier comments (depending upon which e-portfolio tools are used and how assessment is done) which would make providers and awarding bodies rather nervous!  There need to be some lines of demarcation to ensure this cannot happen.

If it's as an e-portfolio of learners experiences, and work which is not assessed within the e-portfolio itself, and therefore it doesn't matter whether a learner can edit everything, then it is learner owned.

I think I would tend to agree with Ray here, in that if the e-portfolio is to be a personal and portable resource for the student, then it needs to be 'owned' by the student and thus avoiding student access being purely tied to the institution owned VLE.


However, clearly from the institution's point of view, they'll want a system that can be seamlessly integrated into their VLE to provide teachers (and students) access to all of the e-portfolio functionality when working at the institution, and to provide aggregated views of the students' work in the context of class/course groups etc.

This is the approach that we try to take with our own coursework assessment e-portfolio system (MAPS) that we supply to schools and colleges, where the system is entirely web-services based, i.e. a collection of web 2.0 assessment tools that can either be brought together in a range of ways to meet the requirements of the different types of user - seamlessly within the VLE for the institution and as a stand-alone system for the student, which they can take with them as they move around from institution to institution.

I guess the other factor that needs to be kept in mind here is how you are defining an e-portfolio, as this term means a myriad of things to different people. In essence there seem to be two main types, self-reflective e-portfolios such as Mahara and PebblePad and then more assessment focused systems such as MAPS and Paperfree. However, my personal view is that which ever type of system you are after, it has to work in different ways for different types of user and provide both the institution and individual with what they need out of a system like this.

May I question your thinking?  Despite accepted institutional thinking, I
see no reason why the e-Portfolio should be embedded *IN* the VLE.  Surely,
if the learner's e-Portfolio is to be learner-owned and fully portable from
one institution to another or on to the workplace, then it should be
independent of any VLE?
