MATHEMATICS: GRAPHING:
Gnuplot

Many thanks to Sebastien Bacle for providing resource collections for the

Russell Conwell Educational Services Center
Learning Research and Study Resources Subject Guide.

<http://guides.temple.edu/Russell-Conwell-Center>

Sebastien Bacle has provided two collections, a collection of general
sources and a collection of math sources designed to help students learn
and do college level work.

Among the Mathematics sources Sebastien has shared is Gnuplot

Gnuplot
<http://www.gnuplot.info/>

Gnuplot is a portable command-line driven graphing utility for linux,
OS/2, MS Windows, OSX, VMS, and many other platforms. The source code is
copyrighted but freely distributed (i.e., you don't have to pay for it).
It was originally created to allow scientists and students to visualize
mathematical functions and data interactively, but has grown to support
many non-interactive uses such as web scripting. It is also used as a
plotting engine by third-party applications like Octave. Gnuplot has been
supported and under active development since 1986.

Gnuplot supports many types of plots in either 2D and 3D. It can draw
using lines, points, boxes, contours, vector fields, surfaces, and various
associated text. It also supports various specialized plot types. Demos
here.

Software that uses gnuplot

Among others...:

Octave, a high-level language for numerical computations. Mostly
compatible with Matlab.

Useful additions (scripts):

Reading gnuplot hotkeys: see the section on bi-directional communication
above.

imagegp.m (version 2006-04-10): a replacement for the default image.m,

imagesc.m, and imshow.m, which are fast and support true axes. Requires
gnuplot development version 4.1 (uses the plot ... with image plotting
style).

loadgpbin.m and_savegpbin.m: load and save gnuplot binary matrix files
(those from help binary matrix and splot 'x.gpbin' binary).

Maxima, a program for symbolic computation. Here are some nice examples of
gnuplot output.

Mifit, a program to generate assembler code needed to approximate a data
set using simple functions.

statist is a small and portable statistics program, simple to use and can
be run in scripts.

Speaking of software, the topic of Powerpoint came up on the Temple
Univerisity Listserv based SportPsy list and I contributed this pair of
links that should especially interest those who either have qualms about
the use of Powerpoint as well as those who are addicted to this tool.

Please do not give up on powerpoints entirely, they make great ball point
pens!!!
