Hello everyone Having looked at Arti and various other posts and thought about the conversation I had last week with Janet Strivens. I think that there is really no "one size fits all" option or technology and it might be a case of stepping outside your own comfort zones and seeing where that take you all. At Baker Street I am allowing students to choose their own platforms after showing them BB which lots of them move out of very quickly generally they are currently using - Mac's, Publisher, One webs.com, moonfruit, blogger- what I am very strong on with them in a web environment is personal Data Protection and post graduation I now have a disposals issue to resolve regarding data protection for students who have not collected their CD's. I have had some really interesting results with the students here at Westminster as they are are using a number of platforms and that helps me with the CPD requirements of the professional institutions - as RICS feed are an online reality for our students. The graduated students are reporting back that they are finding the RICS APC online process easier to engage in because of the model I use and flexibility in platforms and the RICS advise that the quality of our APC students is starting to stand them out now from the overall body of students going through. Taking this on and thinking also about some of the discussions at the CPD group I go to about the issues facing them as a cross pollenation from Industry and various other areas of life CPD is a reality for large numbers of workers and professional as a consequence of insurance mitigation needs in professional indemnity and liability. I know this is going to rattle some people but PDP needs to be linked to post graduate training requirements for APC - that way students find it useful - the problem I suspect is in making it relevant for students who do not have APC or CPD requirements or whose institutions have not moved to an E platform as of yet. I don't have all the answers I can only tell you what I have tried - somethings work others do not so stick with it and try things out and ask the students what they want , need or think is relevant to them as part of their PDP - they will let you know Jacque -----Original Message----- From: Discussion and support list for PDP UK Network members [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Arti Kumar Sent: 18 November 2009 10:28 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Using Blackboard for PDP We have had a similar experience at Bedfordshire, Shelley. We switched to PebblePad just over a year ago. Whatever technical platform you use, i think it's the relevance of the critical prompts and enabling tools you build into the reflective practice and action plans for students that make PDP engaging. We take the view here that these approaches need to be an accredited and preferably assessed part of the curriculum (still 'work in progress'). Have used it for the past 2 years and many students choose to build their portfolio outside BB. It is clunky, it formats pages the way it thinks they should be formatted etc. and most of the students feel it is inadequate. That's my two penneth! Might also be able to help with a short term demo account if you would like. At present we are pretty much locked into using WebCT Vista but in order to make the most of what we do have and capitalise on this opportunity to change the way it works, I was wondering if anyone is using (successfully if possible, but not exclusively) Blackboard for PDP. I would be very interested to hear what works, what doesn't, what you've added or taken away and how staff are supported in its use. Also, if there would be any possibility of having access to a demo account then that would be very helpful indeed.
