Personal and Public Lives:

Exploring Relationships, Roles, and

Responsibilities

An international and interdisciplinary conference to be held at the University of Huddersfield

7 to 9 September 2010

Call for papers

Confirmed Plenary Speakers

Emeritus Professor Mavis Kirkham

Professor Eleanor Krassen Covan

Professor Jenny Hockey

Professor Amrit Wilson

The University of Huddersfield Centres for Research in the Social Sciences and Health and Social Care Research are hosting this

international and interdisciplinary conference at the University of Huddersfield to explore how people live and experience their

personal and public lives.

The conference aims to bring together researchers and practitioners. It will examine the interface between the personal and the

public in order to offer insight into the multiple and diverse roles, relationships, and responsibilities that shape people’s everyday lives.

The main themes and questions addressed by the conference are:

· the negotiation of positive and negative aspects of relationships, within different settings such as health, social care, family

and friendship networks

· how do social and organisational contexts influence personal thoughts, emotions, desires, and actions?

· the influence of personal background differences, such as age, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, and disability, on public

relationships

· changing roles and relationships in different contexts

We particularly encourage critical perspectives on different theoretical and methodological approaches, emergent ideas, and empirical

findings.
