RICS Geomatics Evening Lecture Series 2009-10 - Autumn/Winter sessions
Dear Colleagues
RICS Geomatics will be continuing its unique series of evening lectures again this session 2009-10. After two years outside of their traditional home, this years evening lectures return to RICS HQ, Parliament Square. RICS GGS has undergone an extensive refurbishment and I would encourage all members and attendees to have a look around at the new facilties. The first two or three lectures will be held in the Brussels Room on the ground floor the main lecture hall should be available in due course.

As always, regular email updates will continue throughout the year and within the pages of both the Land Journal and Geomatics World. Each lecture is CPD relevant and counts towards your CPD/LLL quota as specified within RICS regulations. There is no need to pre-book unless otherwise specified. This email also contains Geomatics relevant information on the latest downloads and geo news from RICS.

RICS Geo members in the UK South West region can find details of the regional lecture programme @ RICS Geo South West http://www.rics.org/site/scripts/news_article.aspx?categoryID=339&newsID=880

Thurs Nov 12th , 17.30 for 18.00 – marine survey – Glyn Hunt - Fugro - marine surveying
Location - RICS 12 Great George St, Parliament Square, SW1P 3AD

Speaker: Glyn has been involved in Surveying since 1995, after taking a Geographical course based at Swansea, UK.  From this and other subsequent training, he has worked throughout Western Europe in a variety of different Surveying / Construction guises, in environments including both onshore, offshore, and underground.

Always taking the care to describe himself foremost as a Land Surveyor, he sees anyone possessing the basic core Geographical and Surveying skills as having an amazing opportunity to skip between the various branches of what the RICS today brands “Geomatics”, giving them access to workplaces and practices they never could have originally imagined.

His work since late 2007 has been offshore with the global exploration group Fugro.  Due to his background he has been largely involved with rig move positioning, but has also had the opportunity to work in other types of operations offshore, e.g. a recent 6-week stint as Surveyor on one of the world’s largest construction vessels.  As he’ll readily admit, there are so many different types of survey practices offshore it would be at least 5 years before he could become truly described as a Hydrographic Surveyor.

Synopsis: The talk will concentrate on the various hardware, skills and problems faced offshore by Positioning Surveyors on rig moves, i.e. moving oil / gas rigs to new locations.  This work requires knowledge of offshore drilling, Seamanship, Charting, Electrical Engineering, Client / Project Management, Geodesy, Computing, historical (legacy) methods, as well as the most cutting edge DGPS techniques possible for sometimes cm-accuracies.  Thrown into this is the requirement to understand and often use a host of various survey / navigation instruments, ranging from the Sextant to Gyrocompasses, plus work under often extreme weather conditions.  All this is from the viewpoint of a person who still admits to constantly learning new things with each trip, and views life offshore from the perspective of someone who has enjoyed the freedoms offered by regular Monday ~ Friday onshore work for over a decade.
