Manty thanks Ron, we had heard about these when they were being written and were really envious ! Then soon, we had our own curriculum. A document like this is immensly helpful, not least for new teachers of ESOL like me - well I was a new teacher back then. It helped me see the bigger picture but also, again, allowed that shared understanding. Thankyou so much. It's wonderful to have these global discussion lists and to have a common language to talk about learners. all the best, Naeema -----Original Message----- From: ESOL-Research discussion forum and message board [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Ron Lavoie Sent: 05 November 2009 12:42 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Teach Pre_LITERATE ESOL students (in their own languages) As I understand the term, pre-literate refers to individuals speaking languages without a written form, or for which a written form has only recently been devised. In Canada, we generally use the term "literacy learner" rather than "illiterate." I feel more comfortable with this - I used to run a basic literacy programme for pre and low-literate adults, giving literacy and study skills in L1. It's certainly a few years since I heard someone use "illiterate" to refer to adult Literacy learners. Adrian.
