Subject: Re: NINOs the legislation behind them?

All,

I am currently in conversation (ha) with an external organisation about their insistence on obtaining NINOs for individuals, for non benefit or tax purposes, in fact just to identify the individual even though they then create a personal identifier of their own.

Without going into all the details of this issue - Can anyone tell me what the basis for the restricted use of the NINO is?

I have assumed there is a legislative restriction, ergo the need for the NINO borad, in part set up to approve applications for use of the NINO for purposes other than tax/benefit.

All I can gather so far, is that those who know anything about DP and NINOs all believe that it can't be used for other purposes unless approved by the NINO board, because the NINO belongs to the DWP/HMRC but no one knows where the restrictions come from, maybe the NINO is subject to copyright - I don't know.

I know it's Friday, but can you help??

Thanks
