Yes we use that same approach at http://online.tvu.ac.uk/ Our image is 1600 x 120 So far I've only come across one person in the university with a monitor so wide that the image scrolls horizontally! Have a look at http://blackboard.smu.ac.uk we have used this method for a full screen image at the top.
