You're right, Liz, we need to laugh now and then!  As Fred Nietzsche said:“Perhaps I know best why it is man alone who laughs; he alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter.”

Archive Slogans

Sometimes, you know, we’re just having a laugh. And you’re right Tom, unsubbing might be OTT but using the delete key is cheap, easy and effective.

Dear all,

I find this email list to be a fantastic resource for keeping up to date with current issues and shared frustrations in archives around the country and world. It raises stimulating discussion topics, and in many instances answers questions to which we may not otherwise know how to go about answering.

With this in mind, suggesting that we automatically delete or unsubscribe from the the list in order to avoid being bombarded with threads such as this one rather misses the point both of the list and of subscribers' reasons for subscribing in the first place.

The last thing I want to do is to appear disrespectful or insulting to anyone who does just want to swap a few frivolous archive-based jokes. This email list, however, is simply not the place to do it. It is absolutely essential that the informative and useful nature of the list is maintained, or everybody will simply lose interest and stop using it as a tool. In the current age of transition and adaptation, I cannot see that that is a particularly wise outcome to pursue.

I will leave it at that, as from experience, I know that lengthy emails are dismissed as rants and deleted as readily as novelty threads. I would just like to reiterate that it is not productive to send frankly embarrassing emails to everybody, who will simply stop paying attention, and that it is the sort of thing that really should be shared with friends or familiar colleagues in a controlled environment or classified forum.

Regards,

Tom Midgley

Whilst the current slogan thread might not be to everyone’s taste and maybe it is annoying if you’re trying to get on with something and you keep getting frivolous messages, I suggest that anyone who doesn’t want to receive them either un-subscribes for a short period or sets a rule to delete the messages rather than asking people not to post them.

I’m enjoying the suggestions.
