Here are some figures from the ‘career by numbers’ column in today’s Work section of the Guardian newspaper – which looks at the career of archivist (the data is supplied by the Society of Archivists).
£22,500 – guideline salary for a newly-qualified archivist
£30,000 – guideline salary for an experienced archivist
£43,000 – guideline salary for a senior archivist
70% - percentage of archivists who are female
30% - percentage of archivists who are male
2,500 – approximate number of archivists currently working in the UK
1 – number of years’ postgraduate study required to become a qualified archivist
90% - percentage of newly qualified archivists who find employment
71% of archivists work in the public sector
29% of archivists work in the private sector
