Not surprising. The skin actually needs more of the natural oil
(sebum) in the winter to help combat the increased loss of moisture due to the
dry conditions. Unfortunately, the sebaceous glands produce up to one third
less sebum in the winter months.
Central heating will also result in a lowering of relative
humidity. Just ask any antiques dealer what it does to old furniture!
This is why moisturising lotions are so important in the winter
months (or more correctly throughout the year!).
“In a study comprising 111 healthcare workers who all
washed their hands at least 8 times each day...
58% developed hand dermatitis to soaps
All of the severe cases developed during the period November to
April and 79% of the milder cases also during the winter months.”
