MLA explores online applications for export licenses in response to consultation on AELU move.
Following consultation on plans to relocate the Acquisitions, Exports, and Loans Unit (AELU) from London to its headquarters in Birmingham, the MLA is working up plans to enable customers to apply for an export licence online. In line with government requirements, the MLA Board decided in May this year, that its AELU services are to be integrated with the MLA's other delivery teams that are already located in its new Birmingham headquarters.

Hedley Swain, Director of Programmes said: "An online system would be a cost effective new benefit for customers, but we need time to explore this in detail, and to hear the views of the people who would be using it. We will ensure that our resulting plans maintain the very high standard of service currently provided."

Conservation grants
The AIM Conservation Grant Scheme, supported generously by The Pilgrim Trust, is intended to assist AIM’s smaller members with conservation of important objects in their collections. Accessioned objects in any media are eligible. Whilst we expect museums to have a conservation plan, the object does not have to be the most at risk in the collection. The reason for choosing the object must be made clear in your application. For example, the object may be planned for use in a temporary exhibition. Conservation work should be carried out by a conservator chosen from the ICON register, unless there are exceptional circumstances where this is not possible.

Closing dates for the scheme are 31 March and 30 September in each year until at least 2013. The application form can be downloaded at the bottom of this page. For further information contact Roger Hornshaw, AIM Administrator on 02392 587751, email [log in to unmask]

The Wedgwoods And The Darwins: The Marriage Of Science And Industry - Stoke On Trent, 15th November 2009
The voyage of the Beagle took Charles Darwin to the other side of the Earth, seeking answers to the mystery of man’s origins. Yet so often, his questions would lead him back to Staffordshire, to the land of his grandfathers, Josiah Wedgwood and Erasmus Darwin, and to intense discussions with his Wedgwood kin.

At the end of a year in which Darwin’s bicentenary and the 150th anniversary of ‘Origins’ have caused this modest giant of science to be examined, the  Wedgwood Museum - presents a symposium illustrating the evolution of the relationship between the Wedgwoods and the Darwins.

New research published on museum role in communities
The publication presents findings of research which was commissioned by Museums Galleries Scotland to explore the purpose of five museums and look at how they engage with their communities. The research findings demonstrate the significant impact that these museums are having on their local communities and the report provides robust evidence of the ways in which they help to build up physical, human, social, economic, and cultural capital in their surrounding area. Among the themes emerging from the research are the participation by museums in community action and the innovation displayed through their service delivery. The research also sheds light on a truly enterprising third sector.

Listening to families: learning & outcomes from the National Trust’s London voices project - London, 29th October 2009
This is an event for anyone working in an organisation currently running family learning activities or who are hoping to plan future family learning activities. Since 2006 The National Trust has been running the London Voice’s Project in order to connect local families with their nearest National Trust property. The project is finishing at the end of October 2009 and The National Trust and MLA London have collaborated to facilitate a one day training event on family learning to share the knowledge and experience gained during this extremely successful project.

Using the project as a base to present best practice and help identify the challenges and success points in delivering family learning projects, this one day course will explore how to connect with this key audience for the heritage sector. The course will include a mixture of case studies, presentations, and practical activities focusing on engaging with family audiences from marketing through to creative programming and evaluation.

Behind the scenes at the museum: the effects of the recession
As the realities of the recession hit home, visitors have taken refuge in Britain's museums and galleries over the summer. The Art Fund's second nationwide museums and galleries survey shows that predictions of the Great British "Staycation" proved accurate with half of UK museums and galleries seeing an increase in visitors between March and September 2009, including a fifth of museums who saw a rise in visitors of over 10%. However, this positive result masks the fact that behind the scenes budgets are being cut, staffing is under pressure and the basic costs of keeping these institutions running are on the up.

NEWYDDION - LLOEGR

Gold hoard seen by 40,000 people
More than 40,000 people have already queued up to see the UK's largest haul of Anglo-Saxon treasure. The collection of 1,500 gold and silver pieces has been on display at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery since 25 September. It was found last month on a Staffordshire farm by a man using a metal detector. The items are only on display at the museum until 13 October, after which they will be sent away to be valued. Experts have indicated the hoard could be worth a "seven-figure sum".

Lewis Chessmen will tour Scotland
Some of the Lewis Chessmen which were found on a beach in the Western Isles more than 150 years ago are being reunited for a tour of Scotland. A total of 30 of the 93 pieces will go on display at locations including the island of Lewis, where they were found. The exhibition will open at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh in May next year. The Chessman will also be on display in Stornoway, Shetland and Aberdeen.

NEWYDDION - DU

Museums 'boosted by staycation'
UK museums and art galleries have seen a rise in visitor numbers due to the recession but face financial worries, a new study has revealed. Two-thirds of cultural institutions reported a rise in admissions during the summer, according to The Art Fund. But at least a quarter reported having to deal with public funding cuts, rising running costs and heavier reliance on voluntary staff. The survey encompassed 225 museums, and the results cover the period from March to September this year.

New National Trust Monopoly set
The National Trust has launched its own Monopoly set, the first ever charity version of the game to be created. Twenty six National Trust places from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland feature in the board game; including beaches, a light house, a mill from the Industrial Revolution and Sir Winston Churchill’s family home. Where there are houses and hotels in the original game, National Trust Monopoly has players building visitor centres and holiday cottages.

Ulster Museum set for reopening
One of Northern Ireland's most popular attractions is to open its doors later this week after undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment. The Ulster Museum closed in October 2006 to allow a £17m renovation to take place. Although it is opening a few months later than originally planned, staff hope the new-look building will soon be attracting record numbers of visitors.

NEWYDDION - RHYNGWLADOL

Louvre to return Egyptian frescos
The Louvre museum in Paris will return five ancient fresco fragments to Egypt within weeks, France's government says. The announcement comes two days after the head of antiquities in Cairo said he would cease all co-operation with the museum until they were sent back. The Egyptians say the Louvre bought the Pharaonic steles in 2000 even though it knew they had been stolen in the 1980s. They are believed to be from a 3,200-year-old tomb of the cleric, Tetaki, in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor.

Imelda's shoes survive Philippine floods
The famous shoe collection of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos has survived the recent floods in Manila. Staff at the Marikina Shoe Museum moved hundreds of pairs just before water swamped the building's ground floor. Marikina was one of the areas worst hit by Typhoon Ketsana, which killed more than 300 people in the Philippines. The huge shoe collection is often seen as a symbol of the lavish tastes of Imelda and her husband, former President Ferdinand Marcos.
