Many thanks to everyone who replied to my request for information on the
subject of the automatic referencing tools in Office 2007. The responses
indicated that there is a debate about using these tools going on in
Universities around the UK. Many respondents recommended the use of
EndNote Web, RefWorks and NoodleTools instead of the tools in Word 2007
and it was pointed out by a number of people that the Word 2007 tools
might be unsuitable for students and academics working on large and
detailed pieces of work (due to the fact that the references need to be
inputted manually on Word 2007). 

 

Some respondents were able to give me links to websites that give
information on how to create custom referencing styles for Word 2007 and
the links are as follows:

If any institution is thinking of creating their own referencing style
for Word 2007 there are two things to consider:

 

1.     You need to have a reasonable knowledge of XML before attempting
it.

2.     You need to have the permission/ability to have the file you
create put into the Microsoft Office programme files directory on every
machine that Word 200 is installed on.

Dear all,

 

We have just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2007 in College and have been
assessing whether to/how to incorporate the automatic Citation and
Bibliography tools into our Information Skills sessions. The main
problem with this is that the only referencing standard that comes close
to the version we use in College is the APA standard and this still
requires students to make tweaks to their citations and references for
Web-based resources (our standard is exactly the same as the Harvard
standard listed in the 'Cite them Right' book). Therefore I would be
grateful if anyone can give me information on the following two queries:

 

*         Is it possible to create/modify custom referencing standards
and upload them into Word 2007? 

*         Does anyone have experience of their Institution encouraging
students to make use of these tools, and if so what are the advantages
or disadvantages?

 

I will collate the responses I get and circulate to the group.
