I had queried remote access availability with them just a couple of days ago and received the reply: "Shibboleth and ezproxy access cannot yet be set up for the Virtual Library, however we are aiming to become Shibboleth compliant in early 2010." I have queried why ezproxy access is a problem available but so far haven't received any reply. We are looking to purchase some ebooks from them but might have to rethink if they can't offer off-campus access. We were told by Thomas Telford about this some months ago and I've been reluctant to promote access as most of the students in this particular area rely on off-campus access. Thanks. Publishing Technology today announced the launch of the ICE Virtual Library for the Institution of Civil Engineers. The ICE Virtual Library is supported by our pub2web technology - our content agnostic, fully-integrated, self-supported platform. It's flexible and modular architecture gave ICE a solution which has allowed them to offer a one-stop shop to the world's largest online civil engineering resource. The new site benefits from our latest innovative technology; combining chapter-by-chapter purchasing, integration of print ordering alongside online access and real-time integration with existing software systems and membership database. The pub2web site also integrates microsites within the main site to reflect different content subsets without compromising the user's experience in site navigation and ordering. We will have representatives at Frankfurt in Hall 8 (#O948), as well as on our main stand in 4.2 (#D416), so please come and visit us to learn more. Also, you can follow us on Twitter @publishingtech and join in discussions in our LinkedIn group "Publishing Technology". The full announcement is provided below (and attached as a PDF). And as always, please let me know if you have any questions. Registered Office: Unipart House, Garsington Road, Oxford OX4 2GQ. For Immediate Release 7 October 2009 Publishing Technology and the Institution of Civil Engineers build the world's largest online civil engineering resource ICE Virtual Library offers joined-up information service for engineers Publishing Technology, the largest provider of software and services for the publishing industry, has recently launched a new and expanded ICE Virtual Library for the Institution of Civil Engineers and its publishing subsidiary Thomas Telford. The platform provides the first consolidated home for journal and book archives that date back to 1836, alongside ICE's professional book list, the ICE manuals series and its new collection of e-books. The Library is supported by Publishing Technology's pub2web technology platform, and represents the world's largest online civil engineering resource. "Publishing Technology were recommended to us for their partnership approach and their technological innovation, and we've been very happy with how both their people and their platform have lived up to that reputation," says Leon Heward-Mills, Publisher for the ICE group. "pub2web has enabled us to unite our various publications and open up new revenue streams and cross-promotion opportunities. We're delighted to be reinforcing our position at the forefront of civil engineering information provision by offering a joined-up, flexible service for our customers and members." Innovative features of the ICE Virtual Library include: - chapter-by-chapter purchasing: customers can pick and mix content items to create packages and qualify for a bulk discount - realtime integration with Thomas Telford's existing software systems and membership database to carry out authentication and synchronise customer information, saving time for ICE staff and ensuring they have full control of data and relationships - integration of print ordering alongside online access to break down traditional barriers between fulfilment options and increase customer choice - microsites within the main site to reflect different content subsets while retaining overall consistency of user experience. "pub2web's modular architecture means we've been able to launch a site that meets the ICE community's current needs, but is also a solid foundation for future experimentation - for example with new business models or semantic web functionality," adds Louise Tutton, Senior Vice President of Publishing Technology's Scholarly Division. "Platform redevelopment is a big investment. pub2web lets publishers 'think big and start small' so that their information can shape itself most effectively around an evolving market."
