We produce an annually updated guide for tutors which attempts to
reflect the different ways in which our institutional PT Policy plays
out in different departments, and to help new tutors consider how to
develop their confidence and ability as a tutor. The guide + some
other CPD materials can be downloaded at
http://staffcentral.brighton.ac.uk/clt/resources/personal_tutor.htm

Also run occasional CPD sessions on the tutorial role, and lobbying to
get this embedded on a more regular basis.

Practice here is very good in most cases, but patchy in that there are
wide variations between departments in the way it is organised, staff
student ratios, and the extent to which tutoring role is properly
reflected in workload allocations. Happy to discuss potential for
improvements more fully off list!

And yes I agree with your use and definition of the word

Subject: LD and 'tutoring'

Dear All

We have a new 'Directorate of Teaching and Learning' in Plymouth, of
which LD, along with ED is now a part. Some of our colleagues are
reconsidering notions of 'tutoring'. If any of you are minded/have time
to comment:

I am interested to know the extent of LD professionals' involvement in
their institutions' tutoring - policy and/or practice; delivery and/or
training.

How is tutoring classified / what terms are used in your institution -
'personal', 'pastoral', 'academic' ... how/are they distinguished?

I wonder if you are involved in providing professional development
activities for academic tutors.

Do you think tutoring practice in your institution is good. Why - or if
not, what is wrong, how could it be improved?

As an aside, we offer LD 1-1 'tutorials' and have fought (e.g. against
'interviews') to retain that name and to insist on its being used only
for 1-1 or small group work in our area (I'd say five would be my
absolute max! I have a colleague lecturing in computing who explained
that there were 28 in her 'tutorial' session!!)

All the best for now

John
