Aims
By the end of the day delegates will
have an increased understanding of the nature and frequency of mental health
problems and have further understanding of the concepts of recovery and social
inclusion. They will have developed an understanding of how people with mental
health problems develop resilience and coping methods; and identify how
prejudice, stigma and discrimination develops. Delegates will be able to place
mental health within the context of cultural heritage organisations.
Objectives

Explore the myths relating to mental health problems

Consider what recovery might mean to people with mental health
problems

Explore the concepts of recovery and social inclusion in theory,

Relating how all of us cope in different ways to different
situations

Understanding how people can function when they are not feeling
well
·
Understand the impact of the risk agenda
·
Increase understanding of what it might feel like to be
stigmatised and discriminated against

Experientially understand how stereotyping leads to prejudice and
subsequently discrimination
·
To consider difficult situations from other people’s
perspectives
·
To appreciate how people with mental health problems may
experience the environment and staff in cultural heritage organisations

London are running two Open to All sessions. To help you decide which day would
be the most appropriate for you to attend please see below:
Day
1 Friday 23rd October 2009 is suitable for all staff and
volunteers in museums and has a focus on the mental health and society; mental
health, social inclusion, and recovery; access; mental health, resilience,
risk, and coping; stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination.
Day
2 Friday 27th November 2009 is specially designed for staff or
volunteers who have public facing roles or run activities for excluded groups
and has a focus on communication skills; understanding how people with mental
health problems experience museums and galleries; dealing with difficult
situations; working with mental health service users.
