    Thanks for the replies I have received.

    Just to clarify something which seems to have puzzled people:

    The pink-noise/power-law/numerous-small/scale-free distribution is the self-similar one where, for example, the frequency of events declines as their magnitude increases-for example, the distribution by size of extraterrestrial objects hitting the earth. The distribution of the logs of values is flat.
