EurIslam Research Assistant (ref. 14986)
Department of Sociology, University of Bristol

18 months full-time post

You will work principally on the British case of a European Union Framework
funded project "Finding a Place for Islam in Europe: Cultural Interaction
between Muslim immigrants and Receiving Societies" (EurIslam) that is also
cross-national collaborative with five other countries.

The project, of which the Bristol part is led by Professor Paul Statham,
studies how the different specific traditions of national identity,
citizenship, and church-state relations in six European countries (Britain,
Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, France) have shaped their
policy efforts to incorporate Islam, and examines the consequences of these
approaches on the patterns of cultural distance and interaction that have
evolved between Muslim migrants (Turks, Moroccans, Pakistanis, Former
Yugoslavs) and their societies of settlement. The British study is
systematically comparable to studies in other countries. Methods include a
survey, media analysis, interviews and focus groups.

You will be part of the international research networks collaborating on
this research and participate fully in the activities of the Department of
Sociology and its research centres. You should have training and
qualifications in a relevant social science discipline and either hold (or
be close to completing) a doctorate. Practical research experience with
qualitative and quantitative data-sets and knowledge of research methods
will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be a member of the University Research Centre
for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship and the International Research
Network for European Political Communications (EurPolCom). This dual
membership reflects the project's substantive topic of inquiry on Islam,
integration and cultural interaction, on one side, and with a European
comparative framework, applying methods for analyzing public discourses and
public opinion, on the other.

This post is available for 18 months commencing 1 January 2010. If
successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent
contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research
experience. Further information can be found at
