I suspect you are right. My view is a reflection of my organisation where the Archival function is not only separate from my own corporately, it is also separated physically by 14 miles since the building of a new archive. Also I am chair of the South West RMS and my opposite in archives is chair of the South West SoA (I think). So we have different strands even within my own organisation. I'm sure we could all work together although I am not so sure that the link, suggested in the continuum model, with archives, is very strong.

Perhaps we should all be under the Knowledge Council or the British Computing Society. I just don't know.

Hi Chris,

Interestingly, I've worked solely in 'modern' (almost solely in digital) records management for over 10 of the 13 years that I have been in this profession but would still consider myself to be an archivist who just happens to be managing records 'further upstream' in the continuum - but that is just a personal view and one that I have already alluded to several times.

In terms of next steps, I guess what is always likely to cloud the issue is the range of views expressed about where we actually want to 'get to'. I don't think this is necessarily a problem at this stage and think that it is a subject worthy of considerable (more) debate than has been had so far so that a few possible destinations can be identified and agreed.

My own personal view (and nothing more than that) is to see the RMS and the SOA (together with the other bodies currently in merger talks with it) in active and open dialogue regarding their possible eventual merger. This would seem to be a huge step in the right direction which would go along way to providing a more unified voice for records professionals within the UK and perhaps an enhanced range of products and services for its combined membership. Once this new body had had a chance to bed down and establish itself, then a separate discussion could be had about next steps (if any) in terms of our relationship with other, relevant bodies and how these could best be formalised for our mutual advantage but would expect this to be some years down the line.

Of course, these are only my own views and I freely admit that I hold no mandate or authority for suggesting this, let alone making it happen. This was the reason for suggesting that both societies hold a ballot of their members re a potential merger as this would be one way of establishing whether there was general support for this idea. I had hoped that perhaps the RMS and SOA might wish to comment officially on some or all of the suggestions put forward in the light of this discussion and remain hopeful that this might still happen.

Regards

Steve

All

Well, we've talked at length, we've argued and in some cases we have done our pitch. The question is have we really got anywhere? The answer, I think, is probably no. I suppose this reflects, at least in GB, the Educational, Local Authority and Central Government bias of the list, we all do good meetings. I expect we will have the same discussion in 2010.

It's good to see the archivists getting some sort of act together with the memorandum of understanding between their various organisations. I like to think of myself as a modern Records Manager not an archivist. My main involvement with the archives is to pass them the stuff that the organisation no longer needs to keep, but retains some sort of historical value. This may be a bit of a "one eyed" view, but as a previous person said modern RM leans towards ICT and Corporate/Information Governance. I take my lead from them. I am not part of the archival function.

This list is a records management list, I think the archive people have their own list, do they have the same type of discussions? Neither am I a library person (although I absolutely love libraries) do they have the same discussions? Is it just us doing the navel gazing?
