Technically AIIM is a trade association, while ARMA International is a
professional association. Both are to a great extent focused on North
America (~20% of ARMA's 11,000 members are from Canada). both provide
information for records managers

with regards to 'chartership' I assume that is similar to licensing. Here in
the US states are responsible for licensing professions. For example CPAs
(aka chartered accountants), physicians, attorneys, professional engineers,
etc are licensed to practice by their individual states. if you move from
one state to another you must satisfy your new state's requirements

More and more professions in the US are creating certifications and avoiding
the issue of licenses (requires laws in each of the 50 states) other
certifications besides the CRM are PMP (Project Management Professional), CA
(Certified Archivist), CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security
Professional), and the CIPP (Certified Information Privacy Professional).
